Creating a routine: Habit setting tips to help you stay on track

Starting a new routine and creating habits can be hard. I have found that over time my morning meditation practice has become embedded into my life. There's no longer this thought of "shall I create time to meditate today?", it's part of my day-to-day way of being.
Overtime I've built a baseline of practice through consistently showing up, and if I miss a morning practice my day feels different. Even just 5 minutes of sitting with my breath makes me feel more grounded and balanced.
That's why I recorded a 7 day free online meditation course with 5-7 minute daily practices so there's enough consistency and an achievable time commitment to start you off!
So many students ask "how do I create a morning routine?". Consistency is one way, but the amazing James Clear has some great habit setting hacks that I've summarised below for you:
1. Start with identity, not just the goal
Rather than thinking: “I want to complete a meditation course.”
Instead, reframe and affirm: “I am someone who shows up for my mental clarity and peace.”
~ When your actions align with your identity, commitment becomes natural.
2. Make It Obvious Set a clear plan
“I’ll meditate at [time] in [place] after [trigger].”
Leave a reminder note where you’ll see it.
3. Make It Attractive
Pair it with a reward (tea, walk, music).
Remind yourself why you’re doing it (calm, focus, less stress).
4. Make It Easy
Use the 2-minute rule: just press play.
Prep space and tools the night before.
5. Make It Satisfying
Track each day (calendar, checklist).
Celebrate small wins (“Day 3 complete!”).
6. Design the Environment
Quiet, clean space.
Minimise distractions (phone on silent).
7. Stay Accountable
Tell someone or post publicly.
Use a small consequence if skipped.
8. Focus on Consistency
Never miss two days in a row.
Progress = small habits × time.
Anyone can start a new routine, it just takes an initial effort to get there, then over time you can surrender into a new way of being. As Danna Faulds says:
“Why wait for your awakening? The moment your eyes are open, seize the day.
